In a significant move to enhance road safety across Punjab, the Transport & Mass Transit Department has officially set a maximum speed limit of 60 km/h for motorcycles. This decision follows the 22nd meeting of the Provincial Cabinet held on January 14, 2025 and aims to reduce traffic accidents involving motorcyclists. The notification, issued under Section 75(2) of the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1965, supersedes all previous directives on this matter.

With motorcycle accidents being a major cause of road fatalities, the Punjab Government has directed strict enforcement of this limit. Law enforcement agencies, including traffic police and emergency services, have been instructed to ensure compliance and provide regular accident data for review at the Chief Minister’s Office.

Punjab Government Sets New Speed Limit for Motorcycles–Official Notification Issued

Ensuring Road Safety – The Need for Speed Regulations in Punjab:

The decision to fix the maximum speed limit for motorcycles at 60 km/h is a proactive step by the Punjab Government to address rising road safety concerns. With thousands of motorcycles on Punjab’s roads, speed-related accidents have become a critical issue. By implementing this regulation, authorities aim to promote responsible driving habits and reduce fatal accidents.

Traffic police, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, will be actively monitoring compliance with this speed limit. Furthermore, a fortnightly review of motorcycle crash data will be conducted at the Chief Minister’s Office to assess the effectiveness of this measure.

By ensuring public awareness and strict enforcement, the government is taking decisive action to make Punjab’s roads safer for all. Motorcyclists are urged to adhere to the new speed regulations to avoid penalties and, more importantly, protect their lives.
