Government of Balochistan Steps Up to Address Water Contamination Concerns:
Ensuring the availability of safe and clean drinking water is a fundamental responsibility of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Government of Balochistan. In response to recent reports indicating elevated fluoride levels in the water sources of Quetta District, particularly in tube wells, the Honorable Minister for PHED, Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran, has directed the formation of a specialized committee to investigate the issue thoroughly. This notification formally establishes a committee comprising experts from Q-WASA, PHED, and the water quality sector to assess the extent of contamination, identify contributing factors, and propose actionable solutions. The committee will collect water samples from various locations, conduct scientific analyses, and explore potential sources of contamination, such as natural geological formations, agricultural runoff, and untreated sewage disposal. The findings of this investigation will be crucial in developing long-term strategies to mitigate water contamination and ensure the safety of public water supplies. The committee is expected to submit a detailed report within four weeks, outlining the results of their analysis, discussions, conclusions, and recommendations for addressing the water quality concerns. NOTIFICATION
CONSTITUTION OF COMMITTEE FOR INVESTIGATION OF WATER QUALITY ISSUES
In view of a recent news report highlighting elevated fluoride levels in water sources, including tube wells in Quetta District, a committee is hereby constituted, as per the directives of the Honorable Minister for PHED, Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran, to investigate the matter and submit a comprehensive report.
Committee Composition:
1. Managing Director Q-WASA Chairman
2. Executive Engineer Q-WASA Member
3. Senior Hydro-geologist Q-WASA/ PHED Member
4. Deputy Secretary (Development )/PHED Member
5. Dr Ziviqar Sheikh Water Quality Analyst Member
Terms of Reference (ToR):
The committee shall:
1. Collect water samples randomly and from the affected area.
2. Conduct water quality analyses of the water samples.
3. Identify the sources of contamination, including natural geological formations, agricultural runoff, untreated sewage disposal, discharges from poultry farms, and other potential pollutants.
4. Determine the inter – relationship of water quality parameters.
5. Submit a comprehensive report to the department within 4 weeks.
Responsibilities
The committee shall:
1. Meet regularly to discuss progress and findings.
2. Coordinate with relevant departments and agencies to collect data and information.
3. Ensure that all tests and analyses are conducted in accordance with standard protocols and procedures.
