Introduction:

In Pakistan, choosing a job field might be difficult because both the Government and private sectors have advantages and disadvantages. The Selection can be made by keeping in view of many aspects, including your education, skills, interests, goals and preferences etc. There are many misconceptions and realities about Government jobs in Pakistan. Some people think working for the government is safer and offers better pay and benefits. However, others say working in the private sector provides more career advancement. After completing the study, the biggest question that comes up is which type of job to choose. You can rightly be guided by a person who has the experience of doing both types of jobs himself. After Completing my B. Com, I joined a private company as an intern as there were limited opportunities for work. Then worked as Assistant Accountant and then Accounts Officer in the same Company for about 4 years. As I did not get time to study in private job, I preferred doing government job which has been going on for last 17 years. In this article we will compare government and private jobs in the light of my experience. We will also compare the two sectors based on some common criteria such as salary, job time, job protection, and increments and promotions etc. We will also discuss some of the myths and realities of government and private jobs in Pakistan. Finally, we will conclude which sector offers more satisfaction and fulfillment to its employees.

Myths and Realities of Government and Private Jobs:

There are myths and realities about government jobs in Pakistan. Many people view working for the government as rewarding and advantageous but is could change according to the situation. There are disadvantages even if government employees enjoy benefits including healthcare and pension programmes and job stability. Government work can lead to slower decision making and limited advancement opportunities. Additionally, political-economic factors affect government employees’ job security and income potential.

Government positions are always stable, another misconception. Job security and stability: how do they differ in government and private jobs in Pakistan? No job is completely secure, but government jobs are usually more secure than private jobs. However, the government sector has also faced layoffs recently, and this trend may continue.

Myth: Government jobs are easy and relaxing.
Reality: Government jobs are not easy and relaxing. Due to bureaucratic system, in government sector jobs, government employees have to deal with a lot of formalities like audits and inspections, rules and regulations, protocols and procedures, deadlines and targets and a lot of paperwork. Moreover, government employees face a lot of stress, tension, politics, nepotism and favouritism etc.

Reality: Private jobs are not hard and hectic. There is a huge quantity of paper work, bureaucracy, regulations, rules, procedures, operations, deadlines, formalities, objectives, audits and inspections to deal with.

Usually in most cases, Private sector pays more salaries than Government sector jobs. On the other side, in private sector the speed of promotion and growth in job position is faster than Government jobs. Moreover, Government jobs gave freedom of place and working hours which can be beneficial for the family responsibilities. Government employees get paid leaves on a monthly and yearly basis for various reasons, such as casual, sick, annual, maternity, etc. They can easily avail these leaves by showing a valid reason and approval from their seniors. On the other side, in private organizations, it is very hard to get paid leaves.

Pension:

Government employees get a monthly pension after their retirement until their death. This pension helps them to maintain their living standard and support their families even after they stop working. On the other side, in private organizations, there are very limited opportunities of pension like EOBI etc.

Health Insurance:

Private employees get free or subsidized health insurance for themselves and their dependents by their organizations because they purchased health insurances plans from private insurance companies. They can access quality health care services from public or private hospitals without paying much out of their pocket.

Group Insurance:

Government employees get free group insurance for themselves and their dependents. They can access quality health care services from public or private hospitals without paying much out of their pocket.

Benevolent Fund:

Government employees get free kind grants like education, burial and marriage grants for themselves and their dependents. On the other side private employees have very limited prospects like these from workers unions and EOBI etc.

Education Allowance:

They differ for government and private employees. Government employees enjoy an education allowance for their children up to a certain level of education. They have the freedom to opt for either public or private educational institutions for their children, devoid of any financial obligations of fees. Private employees, however, have to bear all the costs of education by themselves.

Loans:

Government employees also get loans from their organizations for various needs, such as house building finance, car purchase, Bike purchase, Cycle purchase and marriage grant etc. These loans are accompanied by nominal interest rates and convenient repayment terms, ensuring a seamless process of loan reimbursement. Private employees do not get such benefits from their organizations.

Private employees get a certain percentage of workers profitability bonus, Performance bonus, Eid Bonus, attendance bonus and Annual Bonuses etc. from their organizations for various purposes and occasions, on the other side, government employees, there is a bonus type called Honorarium which is distributed among some of the employees and usually once a year.

Though people prefer doing government jobs in Pakistan, they are affected by their system which sometimes become unbearable. They have very tight schedules which makes it tough for them to manage their personal and work life. There’s no opportunity for them to showcase their skills. They have to work according to a predetermined system. They become bound after getting government job and cannot look for better opportunities. It’s like getting stuck somewhere and compromise in less. It sometime wears them down.

With all the shortcomings in the system of government job, it still has advantages which make employees to choose government jobs. One of the advantages is job security. With government job comes job security which we can’t guarantee in private sectors. As we have seen during COVID-19, many people who were doing private jobs lost their jobs and are still struggling to get a new one. Pension plans are also a plus point in government jobs. Besides these there are allowances that government employees get that mark perks of their job.
