SUBJECT: TORRENTIAL MONSOON RAINS PREDICTED IN THE COUNTRY FROM 1st to 6th AUGUST WITH OCCASIONAL GAPS
- Weather Situation:
Met office (vide letter no. NWFC-500Ay2017/86) has informed that strong monsoon currents are likely to penetrate from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal in upper parts from 31st July (night) and then in central and southern parts from 2nd August. Under the influence of this weather system:
- Rain-wind/thunder showers (scattered heavy with isolated very heavyfalls) are expected in Rawalpindi. Murree, Galliyat, Anock, Chakwal, Talagang, Jhelum, Mandl Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Sahiwal. Jhang. Toba Tck Singh. Nankana Sahib. Chiniot. Faisalabad, Lahore, Sheilthupura. Sialkot. Narowal, Okara. Pakpattan, Kasur. Khushab, Sargodha. Bhaldcar and Mianwali from 1st to 6th August with occasional gaps.
- Rain-wind/thunder showers (with heavyfalls) are expected in Bahawalpur. Bahawalnagar, Khanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan. KhanewaL Lodhran. Muzaffargarh. Kot Add. Rajanpur. Rahimyar Khan and Layyah from 2nd to 6th August with occasional gaps.
POSSIBLE IMPACTS:
- Torrential rains may generate flash flooding in local nullahs/streams of Murree, Galliyat. Rawalpindi, Northeast Punjab and HUI torrents of D.G Khan from 2nd to 5th August.
- Heavy Downpour may cause urban flooding in low lying areas of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sheilthupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan and Sahiwal from 2nd to 5th August.
- Landslides may cause roads closure at the vulnerable hilly areas of Murree and Galliyat during the wet period
- Heavy downpour/windstorm and lightning may affect daily routines, weak structures like roof/wall collapse of Kasha houses, electric poles, billboards, vehicles and solar panels etc during the period.
- Farmers are advised to manage their activities keeping in view the weather forecast.
- Travelers and tourists are advised to remain extra cautious and manage their travelling according to weather conditions and avoid any untoward situation during the wet spell.
- PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:
i.         Ensure sufficient staffing round-the-clock in DEOCs for effective coordination and response.
ii.        Collect and share the latest information with PUMA, line departments, and national authorities.
iii.         Generate Situation Reports (S1TREP) to cover any major incidents/developments to share with PDMA promptly.
iv.       Rescue 1122 (Disaster Response Force) to remain high alert and have sufficient emergency response personnel and equipment during the forecasted period.
v.           Establish a streamlined and efficient communication system through phone calls, SMS and announcements to ensure timely dissemination of weather forecasts, advisories, and alerts to local community through Patwaris. Lumberdars, Notables and general announcement in Mosques.
vi.       All the WASAs and local LGs to remain vigilant and timely take action in case of urban flooding in forecasted regions.
vii.        Share daily / routine updates with PDMA Punjab in case of any eventuality.
